Summer Events Diary 2015

They say one swallow doesn't make a summer, and neither does one party!

During the 2014 City of Culture, we were proud to welcome visitors to Limerick Town Centre at our little home in Lucky Lane, Catherine Street, and to be involved with a City of Culture project, QUEST which was devised and curated by inspirational Limerick photographer, artist and social engager Deirdre Power - see http://limerickcityofculture.ie/content/quest

During the City of Culture summer, we displayed what became known locally as the

'Limerick Pineapple',

This was a cultivated slip from an imported plant, grown on at our nursery, and then exhibited in a specially

made display case at Colbert Station, and then for the duration of the balmy summer on Catherine Street.

Our intent was to enable and inspire discussion and discourse on a wide range of topics raised by the QUEST project, namely the globalisation of local food markets, sustainability in the current retail environment, monoculture and permaculture, to the future of the city centre's retail and leisure offering in terms of it's visitors, bth local and international and the city's resident's expectations.

Meeting minds at the Pineapple was an interesting and fun way to connect first hand with Limerick's local artists,

experts, business owners, tourists and residents - It hardly felt like market research at all!

This year, alongside repeating our offering of locally grown plants, cut flowers and curios,

we've decided to take our show on the road a couple of times.

In the shadow of our first perfect year in Limerick, we now need to follow our first year's success with

'our difficult second album' and spread our seeds further afield, as it were,

plus we'll use any excuse for a night under the canvas!

The 2015 Limerick Show, at Limerick Racecourse, Patrickswell, 22nd and 23rd August

In existence since the 19th century, the local show plays an important part within the agricultural community. Traditionally, they were places members of the farming community would exhibit their animals and socialise with their peers. Hard work was acknowledged and celebrated- a welcome break to the day to day routine.

This tradition is still alive and well today, and there is plenty to see and do whatever the weather.

The Limerick Show has been a huge part of the Limerick social calendar since the first annual show took place at Greenpark Racecourse in 1929. This is the first official record of the event taking place. However, there is evidence that Limerick Show was held at various venues throughout the city as far back as the 1880’s. Historically, the Show was held mid-week. Due to its massive popularity, local businesses would give their staff a half-day so that they could attend the Show. Business people were keen to support the Show and availed of the opportunity to display their goods or network with other businesses.

Visit Munster’s Largest Agricultural Show each day with gates opened from 10am.
